THE LARK IS UP TO MEET THE SUN
AUTHOR: William Holmes McGuffey (1800-73)
The lark is up to meet the sun,
The bee is on the wing;
The ant its la-bor has be-gun,
The woods with music ring.
Shall birds, and bees, and ants, be wise,
While I my mo-ments waste?
O let me with the morn-ing rise,
And to my du-ty haste.
I found this verison on the internet. What Daddy recited was the combination of two poems. "The Lark" is one poem
and the "Woeful Sound" is another. Aunt Renie, Uncle Don, and Daddy grew up hearing their father, Edward Sr. recite
this in the morning. Which explains why we all heard it from Ed Jr. Aunt Renie told me that her father recited it a little
differently. The jaybird did not "waltz" on the frozen ground, He "Sh**"! Daddy changed the words for
childrens ears.
Aunt Renie remembers more history than I could ever begin to remember.
